Natural support including reflexology for pregnancy and postpartum recovery

Reflexology and other complementary therapies have been shown to help manage pain, anxiety, and depression during pregnancy and after birth, according to a new study. Published in a leading academic journal, the research highlights how natural approaches to maternal care can provide valuable support during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.


What did the study look at?


Researchers conducted a review of 17 high-quality clinical trials from a pool of 1,684 studies. The focus was on the effectiveness of various complementary therapies, including reflexology, massage, acupressure, hydrotherapy, aromatherapy and yoga, in supporting women’s well-being during different stages of maternity.


Key findings


Pain management was the most studied symptom. The review found that:


  • Reflexology, hydrotherapy, Swiss ball exercises, acupressure and virtual reality significantly reduced pain during labour.

  • Aromatherapy, electroacupuncture and massage helped relieve pain after Caesarean birth.

  • Yoga, when practised during pregnancy and postpartum, was effective in reducing anxiety and depression.
