Hands-on help: reflexology and massage in rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a long-term autoimmune condition that causes joint pain, swelling and stiffness. It affects people of all ages, from the very young to older people. Although modern medications have hugely improved treatment outcomes, many people still experience symptoms that affect their daily life.

Now a new review of clinical studies, published this year in Rheumatology International looks at how massage therapies – including reflexology, Swedish massage and aromatherapy massage – might help people with rheumatoid arthritis. Evidence pointed out that these therapies can help reduce pain, improve joint function and support the body’s natural systems by lowering inflammation and stress hormones.

As well as easing physical symptoms, the review suggests that reflexology and massage may improve emotional wellbeing – helping with stress, anxiety and sleep, which are common challenges for people with rheumatoid arthritis.

The researchers emphasise that the therapies should be seen as complementary, not alternative. They highlight the value of nurse-led, hands-on care as part of a broader treatment plan.

The bottom line

Foot reflexology and other massage-based therapies show promise in helping manage rheumatoid arthritis symptoms alongside medical treatment. As always, it’s important to consult your healthcare team before adding something new to your care routine.
