New study explores reflexology’s role in diabetic foot health

Updated: Mar 18, 2025

Emerging research suggests that reflexology may have a role in diabetic foot care. A recent study published in a leading academic journal highlights the importance of comprehensive foot care for people with diabetes.

Diabetic foot complications are a major public health concern, yet data shows that 50–80% of diabetic foot infections may be preventable. Experts in the World Journal of Diabetes emphasise the need for greater awareness around blood sugar control, foot ulcers, wound care and diet. Their review of existing evidence suggests that reflexology could be considered as part of a broader foot care routine, alongside standard practices such as proper wound cleaning and the application of antimicrobial cream when necessary.

Additional recommendations include regular check-ups with a healthcare professional and careful selection of footwear. The study concludes that managing diabetic foot health effectively requires a multidisciplinary approach.
